Job Summary:

UNFPA has been implementing its 7th Country Programme in Türkiye covering 2021- 2025. UNFPA Türkiye Country Office, for fifty years, has been working on sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and rights including promoting mother and child health, empowering young people fulfill their potential, promoting gender equality, combating against gender based violence (GBV) and enhancing collection, use, and dissemination of development data in collaboration with state institutions, non-governmental organizations, private sector and universities. Since 2011 UNFPA Türkiye Country Office has been also supporting the humanitarian response efforts of Türkiye on promoting SRH and mitigating the risks of GBV as well as response to GBV in Türkiye.

Türkiye was hit by two big earthquakes with a magnitude of 7.8 and 7.6 in Kahramanmaraş province on 6th February of 2023. The earthquake intensively affected 11 provinces in Türkiye which are highly populated with Syrian and other refugees. UNFPA had 7 service delivery units in the region (responding to refugees), and most have been affected and/or collapsed. UNFPA Türkiye is providing emergency support in the affected provinces that addresses the most urgent basic and life-saving sexual and reproductive health (SRH) needs of women and girls in line with the Minimum Initial Service Package (MISP) of the Inter-Agency Working Group. In addition, UNFPA provides prevention and response services for GBV.

UNFPA is an active partner within the coordination mechanism which was established for the earthquake response of the UN. After the IASC humanitarian system wide scale-up activation in relation to the earthquake, an initial coordination mechanism at Ankara level was activated which then moved to the field level in Gaziantep. In addition, four hub-level coordination mechanisms are located in Kahramanmaraş, Malatya, Adıyaman and Hatay. Both inter-sector and sector level coordination meetings are taking place weekly in Gaziantep and in these four hubs. UNFPA actively contributes to the health and protection sectors; leads the gender based violence (GBV) sub-sector and SRH Working Group (WG). In addition, UNFPA participates in other sectors and working groups to ensure SRH and GBV are mainstreamed.

To strengthen and support its field operations and coordination, UNFPA will be hiring Field Coordination Consultants to be deployed in the four hubs: Kahramanmaraş, Malatya, Adıyaman and Hatay.

How You Can Make a Difference:

UNFPA, Sexual and Reproductive Health Agency of the United Nations, is the lead UN agency for delivering a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe and every young person's potential is fulfilled.  UNFPA’s strategic plan (2022-2025), reaffirms the relevance of the current strategic direction of UNFPA and focuses on three transformative results: to end preventable maternal deaths; end unmet need for family planning; and end gender-based violence and harmful practices. These results capture our strategic commitments on accelerating progress towards realizing the ICPD and SDGs in the Decade of Action leading up to 2030. Our strategic plan calls upon UN Member States, organizations and individuals to “build forward better”, while addressing the negative impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic on women’s and girls’ access to sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights, recover lost gains and realize our goals.

In a world where fundamental human rights are at risk, we need principled and ethical staff, who embody these international norms and standards, and who will defend them courageously and with full conviction.
