(Please note: Internship applications will be added to the pool and the interns will be evaluated and selected from the 2020 pool based on UNFPA Turkey programme needs throughout the year)

Objective: The Internship Programme offers a small group of university students, students in a similar educational programme or university graduates the opportunity to acquire direct exposure to the work of UNFPA. It is intended to complement primarily development-oriented studies or studies in related fields with practical experience. By working under the supervision of a UNFPA staff member, interns may gain a more profound understanding of United Nations development assistance, especially in the field of population and development, reproductive health, HIV/AIDS and gender.

About UNFPA and How You Can Make a Difference: UNFPA is the lead UN agency for delivering a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe and every young person's potential is fulfilled. UNFPA expands choices and possibilities for women and young people to lead healthy and productive lives. UNFPA’s new strategic plan (2018-2021), focuses on three transformative results: to end preventable maternal deaths; end unmet need for family planning; and end gender-based violence and harmful practices.

UNFPA is seeking candidates that transform, inspire and deliver high impact and sustained results. We need interns who are exceptional in how they manage the resources entrusted to them and who commit to deliver excellence in programme results.

Qualifications: Applicants to the UNFPA internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in a postgraduate degree programme (such as a master’s programme, or higher);
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (such as bachelor’s degree or equivalent);
  • Have recently graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation;
  • Be enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship program and undertake the internship as part of this program.

Interns should also meet the following requirements:

  • Written and spoken proficiency in English
  • Full computer literacy (Microsoft Applications)
  • Initiative, sound judgment and demonstrated ability to work harmoniously with staff members from different national and cultural backgrounds.

Duration: Internship assignments vary in length according to the academic requirements of the intern, as well as the needs of UNFPA. Assignments normally last a minimum of six weeks and a maximum of six months. An internship may last up to nine months if the intern can demonstrate that it will award them an educational credit for a course. Internship assignments are available on a part-time and full-time basis.

Status and Duties: Interns are not staff members of UNFPA. The intern does not enjoy the privileges and immunities accorded to the United Nations and its officials. Interns shall not represent UNFPA in any official capacity. Interns shall refrain from any conduct that would adversely reflect on UNFPA or the United Nations and will not engage in any activity which is incompatible with the aims and objectives of the United Nations.

Financial Aspects: Interns do not receive a salary or any other form of remuneration from UNFPA. The costs associated with an intern's participation in the programme must be assumed either by the nominating institution, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students, or by the students themselves, who will have to meet living expenses as well as make their own arrangements for accommodation, travel and other requirements. However, they receive a stipend to help cover basic daily expenses related to the internship, such as meals and transportation at the duty station, if not financially supported by any institution or programme, such as a university, government, foundation, or scholarship programme. No other payments of any kind will be made to an intern by the office in connection with an internship agreement.

In addition, applicants must have medical insurance for the duration of the internship. Proof of insurance will need to be submitted before the internship begins. UNFPA does not provide medical insurance for interns and is not responsible for any claims by any parties where the loss of or damage to their property, death or personal injury was caused by the actions or omission of action by the interns during their internship.

Employment Prospects: The UNFPA internship is not connected with employment and does not give rise to any expectancy of future employment. Interns with UNFPA shall not be eligible for recruitment as a staff member within a 3 month period following the conclusion of the internship. Interns cannot apply for UNFPA posts during the period of internship.

How to Apply: Please review carefully the criteria for internship which are outlined above. UNFPA Turkey Country Office strictly adheres to these criteria. Applicants interested in an internship should submit a United Nations Personal History Form (P-11) (attached above) and an Internship Application Form (attached above) to the following e-mail:
