4-8 December 2017, İzmir - Minimum Initial Service Package (MISP) in emergencies and disasters training of trainers has been carried out in İzmir on 4-8 December 2017 in cooperation with Public Health Specialists Association (HASUDER), Dokuz Eylül University Department of Public Health and United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Turkey office and through the financial support of European Union Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO) Turkey Office.

The Minimum Initial Service Package (MISP) is intended to reduce maternal and infant mortality in emergency and disaster situations, and to prevent gender-based sexual violence and sexually transmitted infections. A total of 30 academicians from the Departments of Public Health of 17 universities participated in the 5-day training of trainers held in İzmir. 

The purpose of this training is to include the Minimum Initial Service Package (MISP), considered an international standard in University training programs and prepared by Interagency Steering Committee and adapted to conditions of Turkey, in training programs in departments of public health in universities, HASUDER and in departments of midwifery/nursing.

The academics participating in this training have gained competence in the following subjects;

  1. Ability to support sexual health and reproductive health in crisis situations as well as gender-based violence issues,
  2. Implementation of the basic concepts and techniques provided in the Minimum Initial Service Package (MISP),
  3. Developing the coordination skills for the implementation of the Minimum Initial Service Package (MISP),
  4. Strengthening the emergency and progressional inter-sectoral communication and cooperation in crisis situations among institutions,
  5. Preparation of an action plan to include in public health training programs before graduation about sexual health, reproductive health and gender-based violence issues.

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) will continue to work on the Minimum Initial Service Package (MISP) Training Program for Sexual Health and Reproductive Health in Disasters (CSÜS) to address the shortcomings of the issue.
